Description
Antique original Waltham U.S.A, high grade 17 jewel Art Deco pocket watch (Gentleman's dress watch) with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a highly ornate 12 carat (tested) white gold filled (known in the U.K as rolled gold) original hermetic case. Full working order and has been fully checked/serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker, guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial:- Impressive and distinctive pale ivory 'double sunk' dial in lovely condition with a little bit of overall patina and light surface scratches as to be expected. Signed clearly in bold black Gothic script; Waltham. Bold black enamelled highly unusual Gothic Arabic numbers (note the little arrow tip to number 4) with black minute markers and bolder 5 minute markers to chapter ring. Double recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut original blued steel 'Breguet Moon' spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order with just a little bit of overall fading commensurate with age. Very thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in amazing clear, bright condition with very few overall little surface scratches and the odd 'flea nibble' showing under eyeglass only. Case:- The extremely ornate (4.5cm diameter / 5.6cm from top of bow to base), 12 carat (tested) white gold filled original hermetic case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 67.2 grams), robust and in super condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and just overall light and fine little surface scratches (again showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age and use in her 95 years service. Both covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish, they screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly and I have oiled the threads for years of continued smooth operation. Beautifully adorned to the front and back cover plus case circumference with a crisp and totally un-worn, slightly raised decoration of leaves and scrollwork around. The back carries an Art Deco, satin finish geometric adornment with a large, un-engraved, fancy shield shaped cartouche to centre. Interestingly the inside of the back cover is not stamped with the makers name or numbered (suspect 'Wadsworth Case Co'), wonder if this 'slipped through the net' at the case factory but was used anyway, we will never know. However the front case curvette is numbered; 9154716. Carries two old service marks and a little bit of scratching - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold. Movement:- The stem wound and set, Waltham high grade 17 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate (Size; 12, Grade; 225, Model; 1894, Run; 252 of 259) lever movement is in superb bright and clean order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked by my long standing watch repairer. Carries the most wonderful, heavy geometric engine turning to the top plates (the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made), with a frosted 'ribbon' decoration around the circumference, little 'daisy flower' radiating from the centre wheel pivot and 'fishscale' engine turning to the bottom plate - always a sign of quality. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel with brass balance screws and two red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel over coil Breguet hairspring (which is true, in the 'round' and 'breathing' well), ruby jewels in red gold sunken settings (centre jewel being correctly screwed in), ruby end stone (again in a red gold chaton setting) and pallet jewels, micrometer star regulator (for precision timing), attractive engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and highly polished steel case screws. Clearly stamped on the top plates in arched Gothic script; Waltham 17 Jewels U.S.A., and is numbered; 27021223 - dating her to 1929. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial), to the underside of the balance cock and the side of the balance bridge; 021 223. Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) with a sure, strong positive action. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly. Lovely original un-worn white gold filled flat topped 'onion' crown. Good original white gold filled un-worn horseshoe shaped bow which is beautifully decorated to both sides with engine turned acanthus leaves, scrolls and a little 'daisy flower' to centre. Appraisal:- A Gentleman's highly attractive top grade American timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
