Description
Serling silver copy of the "Tara" Brooch by Waterhouse in Dublin. The original brooch was found in the west of Ireland, near to Bettystown, Co. Meath either in 1850 or prior to 1850. From there it ended up in the possession of Waterhouse, Jewellers in Dublin who made copies of the brooch front and back, the copies were made slightly smaller than the original at 2.5 inch as against 3.5 inch and did not have the original length of the pin 13 inch, the pin of the copies barely extends beyond the diameter of the brooch, this item is, I am lead to believe, a copy of the front. You need a good glass to to see the Celtic decoration but it is worth the effort, mystical beasts, knots, braiding, serpent's, faces, bosses and studs, this and similar brooches are the origin of the Celtic symbols that are seen today; if this is "but a reasonable copy" I would like to to see the original. Stamped to the reverse, "Waterhouse -- Dublin". The original, was an ornament for a high status personage but nonetheless, was intended for practical use, it is 71 gram in weight, uses would include, scarfs, cloaks, sashes, kilt pins and heavier fabrics. Partially cleaned, would benefit for further cleaning and all is good and original, comes to you in a modern jewellery case.
