William IV Rosewood Prie Dieu Chair, c.1830, Upholstered in Sanderson Chinoiserie Fabric A handsome William IV period Prie Dieu chair, dating to around 1830, with a rosewood frame and later upholstery in a striking Sanderson chinoiserie fabric. The chair has a slender Gothic-inspired form typical of the period, with a tall upholstered back, low seat and original castors. The frame appears to be constructed from solid rosewood to areas including the legs, with thick rosewood veneer used elsewhere. The current upholstery is a Sanderson design produced under licence from The National Trust Enterprises Limited, based on an archival textile. The pattern features stylised pheasants, flowers and foliage, giving the chair a strong decorative chinoiserie character. Importantly, the original tapestry has been retained and stored within the chair, preserving its provenance and historic interest. The chair displays age-related wear consistent with its age. There are signs of old woodworm activity to the underside, which should be considered part of the condition. The original castors remain in place. A highly decorative early 19th-century chair with strong period character, ideal as an accent chair, bedroom chair or decorative piece in a traditional or eclectic interior.
