Description
American Mahogany Adjustable Swivel Desk Armchair by Wm Heywood Chair Co
A rare labelled American mahogany executive swivel desk armchair by the Wm Heywood Chair Co., Fitchburg, Massachusetts, dating to the turn of the twentieth century (c.1898–1903).
Raised on a four-splayed base with castors and retaining its Ross patent mechanism, the chair allows for smooth swivel action and adjustable height. The architectural back with moulded crest rail, shaped arms and broad leather seat reflects the practical yet refined design language associated with turn-of-the-century American executive office furniture. The rich mahogany frame displays warm colour and restrained detailing, giving the piece a confident and timeless presence.
The Wm Heywood Chair Company formed part of one of the most significant American furniture manufacturing groups of the late nineteenth century. Following the 1897 merger between Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company, the firm evolved into what later became the highly regarded Heywood-Wakefield Company, now widely collected for its innovative design and quality craftsmanship. Earlier labelled examples such as this represent the transitional period just after the merger, combining Victorian construction with emerging early twentieth-century office design. Surviving original labels add both historical interest and collectability.
The chair has been fully reupholstered using traditional methods in a hand-dyed leather hide, carried out in-house, and finished with close-set brass studwork in keeping with the period aesthetic. The deep green leather complements the mahogany frame beautifully and enhances the chair’s understated, executive character. Both comfortable and visually strong, it works equally well as a functional desk chair or as a statement piece within a traditional or contemporary interior.
