Description
We offer for consideration this wonderful Welsh drop dial fusee Wall timepiece from c1852, made by Thomas Edwards of Llangollen.
Born in Corwen, 1798, Thomas Edwards was both a qualified horologist and local Publican (firstly at the ‘White Lion Tavern’, Corwen, then the ‘Harp Inn’, Corwen). By 1850 Edwards was making clocks and watches with his two sons; Edward (born 1825) and John Thomas (born 1828), designing and producing notable timepieces under the family business name of “Edwards”, based at Castle Street Square, Llangollen. Indeed, through the attention to detail of their high-quality horological work and craftsmanship they became well-known and much sought after in North Wales and related neighbouring counties of England!
The clocks creative Rosewood cabinet offers an impressive octogen-shaped head over drop box that incorporates a small visible pendulum glazed aperture. The cabinets intarsia includes beautifully hand-crafted Mother of Pearl floral leaf design and stringing, creatively positioned around the frontal boundaries of the case. A hinged inspection door is located to one side of the clock and an operable locking door mechanism located at the base.
The clocks original metal dial has black Roman numerals and “Edwards, Llangollen” painted onto its face, finished with its pair of original blued Lozenge hands secured with a pinned collet. The dial is then protected by thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
The timepiece benefits from a quality 8-day fusee movement set between shouldered plates separated by knopped pillars and comes with its original brass pendulum rod and bob, together with a brass winding key.
A wonderful drop dial clock of superb artistic character and proportion.
