A very impressive Victorian period French striking black Slate Mantel Clock designed, and handcrafted by Bernard Lyon of Paris, and comes with its original and superbly engineered Samuel Marti et Cie circular mechanical movement. The beautifully proportioned heavy slate case sits on an imposing plinth and offers exquisite clean, simple lines. The case is in excellent condition, as is the white enameled dial with black painted Roman numerals, and retains its original pair of blued Straight Breguet hands. The dial is then protected by thick beveled glaze, mounted in a delicately embossed creative brass bezel, signed on its rim with the maker's initials and movement serial number (“B.L 886”). The clock's fabulous high-quality 8-day S. Marti pendulum-driven movement is accessed via a rear-hinged brass fretwork door and strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’. The movement backplate is impressed with the ‘Bernard Lyon, Paris’ trademark, the S. Marti 'Medaille De Bronze' award stamp (won by the Marti company in 1860), and also shows the movement's serial number, all of which help to accurately date the clock. (The Marti bronze medal stamp was an internationally recognized award for French clockmaking excellence!) The clock's pendulum is also original, being stamped with the same serial number as that on the movement and bezel rim, and comes with a period steel winding key.
