Description
A striking First World War period freestanding commemorative brass plaque depicting Field Marshal Herbert Horatio Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850–1916), one of Britain's most celebrated military figures and the face of Britain's famous wartime recruitment campaign. The plaque comprises a finely cast relief bust of Lord Kitchener in full dress uniform with his medal group, mounted upon a shaped brass shield with a ribbon bearing the name 'KITCHENER'. This is fixed to a substantial shaped brass backplate with crossed supports, creating an attractive military trophy design. The reverse retains its original riveted construction. Dating to circa 1914–1916, the piece was produced during the height of Kitchener's popularity following the outbreak of the First World War and is a fine example of British patriotic commemorative metalwork. Its unusual freestanding form makes it considerably scarcer than the more commonly encountered wall plaques and medallions. Presented in very good antique condition with an attractive mellow patina.
