Wrist Watch 1956 Winegartens Owned by Wally Lawes Left with Baby Euston Station

Gentleman's Winegartens high grade Swiss 17 jewel wrist watch originally owned by Wally Lawes - the Porter at Euston Station made famous Worldwide in 1967 who was left 'holding the baby' whilst her Parents departed on the train to Manchester without her. Full working order and has just been cleaned, serviced and regulated by my long standing watch repairer (who is in his 80's). On the 20th January 1967 Mr & Mrs O'Hara were boarding the train at Euston Station to travel to Manchester. Mr O'Hara put one year old baby Deidre with their baggage into the passenger cabin and went to buy tickets. Sadly he was delayed so Mrs O'Hara also stepped off the train to go and find her Husband. The Porter Wally Lawes was alarmed to find the baby unattended so took her and the suitcases off the train just as it was about to pull away. Meanwhile the panicked Parents jumped back on to the departing train, frantically looking for their Daughter but could not find her so pulled the emergency cord to stop the train (next official stop was 177 miles away). They walked back to the Station and were very relieved to find Wally and Deidre safely and happily in the Station office. Dial: Wonderful ivory/champagne coloured dial (tiny bit of overall patina as to be expected) with once luminous Arabic numbers, black second and five second markers to chapter ring and small black Arabic numbers (5 - 60) to outer circumference. Original baton hands (again once luminous with a slight loss of infill to the hour hand) and bright Post Office red sweep hand. Signed clearly in black script; WINEGARTENS LTD LONDON E.C.2 (Winegartens were the historic London jewellers at 145 Bishopsgate. Established in the 1930's and closed in the 1970's). New domed crystal has just been fitted. CASE: Robust steel case (measures 3.1cm width excluding the crown x 4cm lug to lug) is in good order with no wear and just a few light surface scratches commensurate with age. Screw on back cover (operates correctly and tightly) is beautifully engraved: To Wally from Colleagues at Euston Station June 1956. (From this date we can assume the watch was in use with Wally when the above unfortunate event occurred). Also clearly numbered; 82011. The inside carries the most wonderful 'fish scale' engine turning (which is as bright and crisp today as the day it was made) and carries two old service marks - the most recent one from my watch repairer dated 9/26. MOVEMENT: Top grade 17 jewel Swiss lever movement with large ruby jewels in recessed chaton settings. Stamped clearly to the top plates; SWISS 17 JEWELS. Micro adjustment regulator is sat correctly in the central position with the watch keeping excellent time. Handset operates smoothly and correctly and a new crown fitted as part of the watches service. STRAP: New conker brown leather strap (18mm lug width) with silver tone buckle.
