Augusto Rivalta (1837-1925) was born in Alexandria (Egypt) of Italian parents. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and Genoa with the greatest Italian sculptors of the time, Costoli and Dupré. Rivalta was closely associated with the city of Genoa for which he made a number of important public monuments, including an equestrian statue of Garibaldi. Having actively participated in the Italian Risorgimento, he was chosen to represent its major leaders, from Garibaldi himself to Ricasoli, Vittorio Emanuele II and others, all of whom he represented in his statuary. The original masterpiece is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
