James Elliot is a little known but recorded artist exhibiting between 1882 and 1897, he hailed from Manchester and spent time in the artist community around Bettws-y-coed in North Wales but by the time this work was created he had a London address. Elliot exhibited widely including at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He also exhibited in Manchester and Liverpool. This work comes towards the end of his career when he was in London and with the size and scale of it, must have been one of his exhibited pieces.
