James Stephanoff - Artist

James Stephanoff (1788-1874) was a painter of historical biblical and literary subjects exclusively in watercolour, illustrator and architectural draughtsman. Exhibited from 1810-59 at the RA 1812-49, BI, SS, OWS (245 works) and elsewhere. He became a member of OWS in 1819. In 1830 he was appointed Historical Painter in Watercolours to William the Fourth. His subjects we were largely taken from the Bible, from legends and from the poets and he excelled in the representation of public ceremonies and historical incidents which required the skilful grouping of large numbers of figures.
