Walter Farmer was born in Nottingham and worked all his life in the lace trade. He took up painting as a hobby and was entirely self-taught developing a very insightful and clever style. He was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists for many years. He worked chiefly in oils and one of his works titled ‘The Stockinger’ was purchased for the permanent collection of the Nottingham Castle Art Gallery in 1911. Many of his works were interior scenes, like this example, influenced by Dutch painting. He had many works exhibited at The Royal Academy and was a regular exhibitor there from 1909-1920.
