William Beattie Brown - Artist

William Beattie-Brown was born near Haddington, East Lothian, in 1831. He studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under **Robert Scott Lauder** and subsequently established himself as a landscape painter. From around 1860 onwards Beattie-Brown became particularly associated with Highland scenery, developing the area of his practice for which he became best recognised. His landscapes frequently combine close observation of terrain with changing weather, atmospheric distance and dramatic effects of light. Beattie-Brown was elected A.R.S.A. in 1871 and R.S.A. in 1884. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Scottish Academy throughout his long career and also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. His Diploma Work, *Coire-na-Faireamh in Applecross Deer Forest, Ross-shire*, dating from approximately 1883–1884, remains within the Royal Scottish Academy Diploma Collection.
