Victorian antique chest of drawers reflect a period of confidence and expansion in British furniture making. Produced between 1837 and 1901, they differ markedly from the balanced restraint of Georgian design. Mahogany remained popular, though often darker and heavier in appearance than earlier examples. Joinery became more regular as machinery was introduced, with evenly spaced dovetails and circular saw marks appearing internally. Construction is typically robust, with thicker drawer fronts and solid framing designed for practical daily use.
Design and Makers
Victorian taste embraced carving, moulded drawer fronts, turned columns, and ornate handles, especially in mid-century examples. Gothic revival influences were encouraged by designers such as Augustus Welby Pugin, while established firms like Gillows of Lancaster and London continued producing high-quality case furniture.
