For elegant everyday use Edwardian desks can be a great investment. Usually constructed in quality timbers such as Mahogany, Walnut and Oak they lack the fussiness of Victorian desks and thus because of their simplicity suit our modern homes and offices well. By the 1900s desks were commonplace everywhere and Pedestal and Knee Hole desks, Roll Top desks and Bureaus were the most popular, and these were intended mostly for business use.
Since many people were replacing hand written letters for the newer Typewriters, the older sloping writing surfaces were no longer very useful and most Edwardian desks incorporated large flat surfaces instead. Furthermore since the typewriter forced paper sizes to be standardized common sizes such as A4 also emerged meaning the associated drawers of Edwardian desks are usually a suitable size for our modern needs. Alongside more traditionally shaped desks in Mahogany which paid homage to the 18th Century, the Arts & Crafts Movement gave us strong and simple desks that earned their merit through their fine craftsmanship.
