An antique dressing table is elegant, pretty and full of charm, placed in the bedroom it is indicative of glamour and all things ladylike. Antique dressing tables were originally used by the privileged and the wealthy, women who owed dressing tables were often those with social standing, there are many pretty, opulent or intricate antique dressing tables to choose from. Antique dressing tables almost always feature a table, draws, and a mirror; occasionally they feature candleholders for added lighting, and side mirrors. The drawers of an antique dressing table are perfect to store valuables such as jewellery, love letters and keepsakes.
Originally referred to as a ‘toilet table’, the dressing table served the purpose in the bathroom for general hygiene; eventually it evolved to be used for purposes of vanity. Early antique dressing tables are generally extremely rare as they were not an item of furniture used in households often at the time. Earlier dressing tables included a washbasin beneath a fold down top, over time antique dressing tables became smaller and more delicate. The dressing table was developed in the late 17thC Europe and was reflective of the social customs of the time, inspired by the poudreuse in France, and the Low Boy and Shaving table in England.
There are a large variety of Victorian oak dressing tables in existence, as the dresser became more prominent in middleclass Victorian households. During the 19th C the variety of styles of antique dressing tables increased, many were produced in Elizabethan, Rococo, Gothic, and Renaissance and Colonial revivalist styles. By the late 19th C the dressing table began to match the rest of the bedroom suite, rather than maintain its style as a unique stand-alone piece of furniture. In the very early 20th C, around the same time as the Art Deco period, antique dressing tables began to be synonymised with American and European luxury, glamour and wealth.
The Parisian or Queen Anne style antique dressing table oozes style, sophistication and effortless chic. This style in particular is a popular style to be replicated; so many vintage dressing tables of this style exist. A Queen Anne style antique dresser is smaller, delicate, with curving cabriole legs and pad feet. The emphasis is on fluid lines and smoothness. The style of Queen Anne antique dressing tables is also referred to as late Baroque. The cabriole legs were influenced by the French designers of that period. Antique dressing tables from the William and Mary period were characterised by straighter lines.
Duchess Dressing Table

The top of the table is serpentine shaped or rectangular with the addition of a round or oval mirror. An antique duchess dressing table is likely to be made from walnut, cedar or mahogany.
