As a native species across much of Europe and the Americas, Walnut has been used in furniture construction for hundreds of years. Indeed, it is often seen as a real craftsmen’s timber. Almost as strong as Oak the timber cuts and carves very well and the grain can create very appealing forms, particularly at the base near the roots and where branches currently (or used to) join the trunk. This unique effect is known as Burr Walnut and is typically used as a veneer on larger furniture such as wardrobes, tables and chests of drawers. Walnut furniture is commonly found from the 18th Century all the way through to today and it was particularly popular during the Art Deco Period for its striking effect. Solid Walnut has often been reserved for better quality furniture such as dining chairs, desks and cabinets which require fine cuts or detailing and the French in particular used Walnut a lot in their Louis style furniture.
