Nothing makes more of a statement than an impressive old Chandelier. The pièce de résistance to many exquisite rooms, their history can be traced back over 1000 years to Byzantine churches which used similar examples to hold multiple oil lamps. Ancient oil and candle versions can still be found in Religious buildings around the world, and in the Middle Ages Chandeliers began to be incorporated into the homes of the wealthy. Once they moved to the home, then these intricate lighting fixtures became subject to the endless fashions and styles which still sway us today.
The classic Chandelier with multiple cut glass drops emerged during the 18th Century and added a new level of intricacy to the design. Both ornamental and practical to help throw the candlelight around the room this form remained popular until well into the middle of the 20th Century. As first gas then electricity replaced candles, so Chandeliers were modified to suit. Although modern examples use LED lighting there really is nothing more dramatic than an antique Chandelier shimmering from the ceiling, but because they are made of so many parts that can get lost or broken it is best to purchase them from an Antique specialist for piece of mind.
At LoveAntiques we have a fine selection of genuine antique and vintage Chandeliers all restored, rewired and cleaned by our trusted dealers.
