Description
A fascinating, and somewhat disburbing insight into a different world, but undoubtedly of historical interest! This is a lead tobacco box, probably from the 18th century when the slave trade was at its height. The finial to the cover is formed into a slave's head, appropriately because of course the tobacco plantations were worked by slaves. There is an inner lid, also of lead, which would have sat on the tobacco to keep it fresh. Lead is a relatively soft metal and the base has distorted slightly over time.
