18th Century Walnut Dutch Marquetry Cabinet on Chest by Edwards & Roberts

An 18th century and later walnut Dutch marquetry display cabinet on chest, later adapted, restored and retailed by Edwards & Roberts in the 19th century. The piece is accompanied by an original receipt of purchase from Edwards & Roberts dated 1890, providing an unusually strong documentary link to the firm. The cabinet has an arched top and is decorated throughout with floral and arabesque Dutch marquetry. The upper section is fitted with two glazed doors, while the lower bombe-form chest incorporates four drawers, each decorated with corresponding marquetry. Two-door examples of cabinets of this type are particularly unusual, as many comparable display cabinets are more commonly encountered with a single glazed door. The cabinet is believed to incorporate an earlier 18th century core, with later 19th century alterations carried out by Edwards & Roberts, who were well known not only as cabinetmakers and retailers, but also for restoring, adapting and reworking earlier furniture for their clients. The top drawer is stamped “Edwards & Roberts”. Edwards & Roberts Edwards & Roberts was a notable British furniture maker and retailer established in the mid-19th century by Thomas Edwards and William Roberts. Based in London, the firm operated as furniture makers, upholsterers and antique dealers between circa 1845 and 1899. Edwards & Roberts specialised in fine-quality furniture, particularly French-style pieces and reproductions in the Adam, Hepplewhite and Sheraton styles during the second half of the 19th century. Alongside producing original work, the firm gained recognition for its ability to restore and reinterpret earlier furniture, combining historic elements with a high level of craftsmanship and decorative detail. The firm also operated extensively as retailers, and a number of pieces bearing their stamp were not necessarily manufactured by them. In some cases, they retailed work by other makers; a known heart-shaped table by François Linke, for example, bears the Edwards & Roberts stamp, indicating that it passed through their firm. They are also known to have handled earlier furniture dating from the 18th century, which was adapted, restored and subsequently retailed by them. This broader role as makers, restorers and dealers is particularly relevant to the present cabinet. Documented Provenance Of particular importance is the survival of the original Edwards & Roberts receipt dated 1890. Surviving purchase documentation from the firm is uncommon and adds considerable interest to the piece, providing a direct link between the cabinet and one of the best-known London furniture firms of the late 19th century. The combination of the Edwards & Roberts stamp and the surviving 1890 receipt makes this not only a decorative piece of furniture, but also a particularly interesting surviving record of late 19th century furniture history.
