Continental Carved Wooden Statue of a Franciscan Monk, Signed & Dated 1873 A beautifully hand-carved 19th Century small wooden statue depicting a contemplative Franciscan monk, most likely St. Francis of Assisi, signed and dated 1873 on the front of the octagonal base. The figure is shown standing in quiet reflection, dressed in a traditional monastic habit with deeply carved folds and a rosary suspended from the waist. He holds a closed book to his chest, symbolizing study and devotion. Carved with strong detail and visible artisan tool marks, the piece has developed a rich, warm patina over time, enhancing the character of the figure. The inscription and date confirm its creation by an individual craftsman in the late 19th Century and although the signature is partly stylised, it appears to read “Chro. de… 1873” or something similar, suggesting the piece was carved and signed by an individual artisan rather than mass-produced carving giving the work a pleasing authenticity and charm. A fine devotional carving ideal for collectors of religious art, folk carving, or 19th-century European sculpture.
