Description
19th Century Barometer in the style of Daniel Quare circa 1860 British circa 1860 Ebonised fruitwood and ebony In the style of Daniel Quare H: 101cm (39.8")   W: 9cm (3.5")   D: 8cm (3.1") A British 19th century, circa 1860, ebonised fruitwood and ebony barometer very much in the style of Daniel Quare. Daniel Quare (1648 or 1649 – 21 March 1724) was an English clockmaker and instrument maker who invented a repeating watch movement in 1680 and a portable barometer in 1695. In 1695 Daniel Quare applied for and was granted the first patent on the construction of portable barometers. Members of the Royal Society, the most eminent learned institution in Britain, were impressed by his design, which 'inverted without spilling the quick silver, or letting in any air, or excluding the pressure of the atmosphere'. It is likely that the idea came from a description of a portable barometer by Joachim d'Alsace published in Holland in 1688. Thomas Tompion, the leading English clockmaker of the period, also produced portable barometers and should be given some of the credit for their development. Details and photographs of a Barometer made in London by Daniel Quare, on loan to the V & A and subsequently Bequeathed by Lt. Col. G. B. Croft-Lyons FSA, can be found of the following link Barometer | Quare, Daniel | V&A Explore The Collections (vam.ac.uk) For a complete assessment of the item's condition, we encourage you to carefully examine all the provided photos.
