Sank 13/10/1899: Below is an extract that was published about the ships fate in the Shields Daily Gazette on Tuesday, 17/10/1899. Sank after a collision with Leopold II off Dover On a voyage from the Tyne towards Cowes with a cargo of coal Also seen as built by A & R Hopper at Newcastle.Captain Clarkson and part of the crew of the Susannah thrift reached their homes in South Shields yesterday. From an interview a representative had with Captain Clarkson, it would appear that the crew, who numbered seven hands all told, just escaped with their lives. After the Susannah Thrift was run into she dis. appeared within the remarkably short space of three minutes. One of the seamen, named James Boys, through the force of the collision was completely hurled over the vessel's wheel, and carried against the bulwarks with such violence that it is regarded as extremely. fortunate that his injuries did not terminate fatally. Boys next found himself in a very awkward predicament. He was alone the broadside the doomed ship. and finding that she was rapidly going under water, there was no other course open to him than to leap overboard. He was rescued by the steamer's boat in a very exhausted condition. Captain Clarkson and another of the crow, Martin Johnson, suddenly found themselves in the water. They clung to a rope suspended from the other vessel's stern till they were picked up. The whole of the crew have lost all their clothes, etc. Captain Clarkson being rescued without shoes or cap. The night was five and clear. The Susannah Thrift was built by Mr Hopper, and launched from the low end of Newcastle Quay to the order of Mr Ww. Thrift, of Blyth, and was regularly in the Lisbon trade, principally carrying cork and salt. She was the last vessel launched from that place. She was purchased 13 years ago by Mr Pearson. The Susannah Thrift was a noted sailor, making some extraordinary rapid passages on the coast. Ref sources tynebuiltships/S-Ships/susannahthrift1865 & Art UK.
