Online only, based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is a vernacular Scottish staved vessel, known as a 'Luggie' or 'bummie' from the late 19th Century. Luggies are staved vessels of a flexible and utilitarian nature used for a range of household and rural / farming purposes.  Luggies are differentiated by a handle formed by one of the staves extending above the rim. They were used like a single-handled scoop, ladle, bucket or vessel and in larger form were sometimes called 'bumies' for transferrring liquids, milking or carrying items such as eggs.  Large and less decorative versions of these could have been used for a variety of purposes such as within a dairy, washing clothes, carrying water and the smaller feathered decorative versions are thought to have been used for both food and drinks, including ale and porridge.  - Single stave extended handle with moulding for ease of use and comfort in holding the luggie / bummie. - Oak bound with metal bands. - Coopered staves set inside the steel bands. - Wear proporitionate to age on the inside from use, solid with no worm. A great Scottish vernacular decorative storage object, ready for further utility in a new home. Free delivery to the UK mainland as priced. International buyers are welcome, but please contact us prior to payment to confirm the additional packaging, insurance and shipping costs by way of acceptance to your country. Purchaser responsible for local import tariffs/fees.  If you are interested in multiple items, please contact us for combined postage.
