Description
Ángel Pazmiño (Ecuadorian, b. 1926)
Teak and Hand-Tooled Leather Folding Chair, Muebles de Estilo, Quito, circa 1960
A finely crafted folding lounge chair designed by Ángel Pazmiño and produced by Muebles de Estilo, Quito, Ecuador, circa 1960.
The sculptural teak frame supports a hand-tooled saddle leather backrest embossed with a stylised Andean figure, and a seat formed of broad interwoven leather straps. The design merges modernist form with traditional Ecuadorian craftsmanship and indigenous symbolism.
Ángel Pazmiño is regarded as one of Ecuador’s foremost mid-century designers. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he gained international recognition after working under the influence of Danish and Scandinavian design principles introduced to Latin America in the mid-20th century. Through his collaboration with Muebles de Estilo, a Quito-based furniture workshop active during the 1950s to the 1970s, Pazmiño developed a distinctive design language that combined pre-Columbian motifs with clean modern lines, producing furniture that was both functional and deeply rooted in Ecuador’s cultural heritage.
