Description
An Arts and Crafts Oak Corner Cabinet, Monogrammed and Dated 1908, with the crest and name of the De Thorpe Family carved in to the door.
A finely crafted early 20th-century oak corner cabinet, dated 1908, richly patinated and constructed in the Arts and Crafts tradition. The single panelled door is deeply carved with the coat of arms of the De Thorpe family, featuring three crescents beneath an elaborate helm, stag and mantling, and the “DE THORPE” name within the scrolling cartouche below.
The cabinet is fitted with ornamental brass hinges and escutcheon, characteristic of the high-quality craftsmanship of the period, and finished with a dentil-moulded cornice and chamfered sides. The interior retains its original shelves. To the top edge are incised initials and monogram marks, likely those of the maker or workshop.
Executed in solid quarter-sawn oak with visible pegged joints, the cabinet displays the warmth and integrity typical of handwork from the English Arts and Crafts movement, where natural materials and heraldic design were used to convey tradition and identity.
This cabinet is both decorative and historical — a distinctive example of early 20th-century craftsmanship inspired by medieval design, and likely a commissioned piece celebrating family heritage.
