Description
A fabulous image of a wrecked ship, full of drama and movement, engraved as a woodcut by Harry George Webb (1882-1914) after Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956). Brangwyn was multi-talented and one of the most revered artists and muralists of his time in the early 1900s. He was a painter, draughtsman and printmaker, and very much part of the Arts and Crafts movement. He worked for William Morris in his studio working on inlay work, embroidery and wallpapers. He frequently collaborated with other printmakers such as HG Webb, CW Moore and Urushibara who created etchings and woodcuts from his drawings. He became a member of Royal Academy in 1919 and was knighted in 1941.
The Museum of New Zealand holds a copy of this woodcut and dates it to 1912.
The woodcut is unsigned but details printed on the original printed sheet.
