Description
This is a fine image of Eton College in 1838, which formed part of a set of 13 chromo-lithographs by Pyne in a book called "Windsor and its environs", published 1839 by Thomas McClean of the Haymarket, London. James Baker Pyne (1800-1870) was a self-taught landscape artist, who painted in oils and sometimes watercolour. He exhibited at Royal Academy and Royal Institution amongst others.
This print appears to be quite rare. Others from the same set (especially those showing Windsor Castle) are more easily found on internet sites and auction records. This particular print shows signs of wear and tear. There is a small tear top left and close inspection shows minor creasing in several places. These show up on magnified photos, but are not immediately visible when admiring the framed print on the wall! The print is very beautifully framed in a Hogarth frame with lined wash mount, and bears a label for the Parker Gallery in Albemarle St, London, verso.
