Established in 1919, the Bauhaus became an indispensable place for the development of ideas concerning the unification of art, craft and design – an idea which became known as the Gesamtkunstwerk. In Paris, artists such as Brancusi, Modigliani and Soutine established methods of art which were expressive and dynamic. Significant artists to arise from this movement were Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Andre Breton, Rene Magritte and Paul Delvaux.
