The Edwardian Era between 1901-10 marked a slow transition away from the pomp and extravagance of the Victorian Period and towards the Modern Era which would come to mark the 1920s. Furniture from this period largely followed two distinct paths: very traditional Sheraton revival pieces constructed mostly in Mahogany and intended for respectable Middle-Class families. Here slender legs, string inlay and classically decorated brass hands are common. On the other side of Edwardian furniture is the far more expressive Art Furniture which was constructed in a variety of usually solid timbers including Oak, Mahogany and Walnut. These art pieces were often designed by noted designers and makers and still offer a highly practical yet very unique look for the home.
Within the UK many of the Arts & Craft furniture designs we admire came from this Edwardian Era, but so too did the highly decorative Art Nouveau pieces. The style celebrated organic forms and Art Nouveau furniture usually incorporated intricate inlays and sweeping legs. The finest pieces were often by French or European designers such as Louis Majorelle, Emile Galle and Hector Guimard. But here in Scotland we had Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Items by the finest makers can now be very valuable, but since borrowing designs was also common back in the Edwardian Era you can still find plenty of un-attributable pieces which are expertly crafted and robustly constructed.
