Antique Baroque Burr Walnut Chest of Drawers – Ornate Three Drawer Commode

An impressive antique Baroque-style burr walnut chest of drawers, featuring beautifully figured walnut veneers, elaborate architectural mouldings and three generously proportioned drawers. Believed to date from the late 17th to early 18th century, circa 1680–1720, this substantial chest displays many of the decorative characteristics associated with traditional Italian Baroque furniture. Possibly originating from the Lombardy region of Italy, the chest combines richly figured walnut, ornate metal handles and distinctive stepped architectural detailing, creating a handsome and imposing piece of antique furniture. Beautiful Burr Walnut & Decorative Detail The rectangular top is particularly striking, displaying beautifully figured burr walnut veneer with intricate swirling grain patterns, warm golden-brown tones and an attractive aged patina. The distinctive stepped front incorporates three substantial full-width drawers, each framed by decorative geometric mouldings and fitted with ornate metal drop handles. Carved detailing to either side of the drawer fronts, together with the substantial moulded base, adds to the chest's impressive Baroque-inspired appearance. Unusual Fitted Drawer Interior The upper drawer features an interesting fitted interior with two small removable wooden compartments, each incorporating a lift-off lid. These provide useful concealed storage for jewellery, keepsakes, correspondence and smaller personal belongings. Behind the compartments is a larger open storage area lined in green felt. The two lower drawers offer generous open storage space, also featuring green felt-lined interiors. The combination of substantial drawer capacity and unusual fitted compartments makes this a particularly practical and characterful piece. The chest stands on four brass castors, believed to be later additions. The green felt-lined drawer interiors and removable wooden compartments also show signs of previous use. The four brass castors are believed to be later additions rather than original fittings.
