Description
Antique British Bronze Portrait Plaque James Gordon Attributed Alice Gates c.1902 Highlights: * Fine substantial antique British bronze memorial portrait relief. * Depicts James Gordon (1824–1901). * Probably dating from circa 1902. * Attributed to British sculptor Alice Gates, active 1892–1908. * Indistinctly signed lower left, probably “A. Gates”. * Significant documentary connection with the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. * Cast copper-alloy bronze. * Approximately 41 cm high and 5 kg in weight. * Rich naturally aged patina with areas of verdigris. Description A fine and substantial antique British bronze memorial portrait relief depicting James Gordon (1824–1901), probably dating from circa 1902. The work is now catalogued as attributed to British sculptor Alice Gates, active 1892–1908. Gordon is portrayed almost frontally as a distinguished mature gentleman with a full beard and formal dress. His name and life dates are incorporated directly into the cast relief. An indistinct lower-left signature is believed most plausibly to read “A. Gates”. This attribution is strengthened considerably by the documented exhibition of Alice Gates's *The late James Gordon, Esq.* at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in 1902. As the documented Walker work was described as a plaster medallion, the present bronze may represent a bronze version or related memorial adaptation. The attribution therefore remains qualified pending further documentary comparison.
