This is a wonderful and unusual original early 20th-century antique Burmese Pegu Bronze Figurine depicting a male figure carrying a heavy burden across his shoulder. Dating to the early 20th century, this fascinating bronze sculpture is beautifully modelled, with the standing figure depicted supporting a large cylindrical burden across his shoulder with both hands. The figure displays particularly pleasing detail throughout, including his expressive facial features, distinctive hair, slender yet muscular physique and traditional tied garment around his waist. Of particular note is the fabulous ornately carved and tiered integral stand, decorated with traditional Burmese-inspired motifs and giving this relatively small bronze a surprisingly impressive presence. The bronze has acquired a wonderful deep, naturally aged patina, with subtle variations to the surface that add enormously to its antique character and authenticity. The subject of the burden carrier provides a fascinating glimpse into everyday Burmese life and makes this a particularly interesting example of early 20th-century Southeast Asian decorative art.
