Description
This is an antique canteen. An English, fine oak campaign cutlery case by Mappin & Webb, dating to the Edwardian period, circa 1910.
Exceptional quality and of comprehensive arrangement. Fine craftsmanship and form presents opportunity for use as a quality specimen cabinet. Displaying a desirable aged patina and in very good order. Select oak shows superior grain interest and wisps of medullary rays. Rich caramel hues beam beneath the wax polish finish.
Gently rolled lid with unmarked shield cartouche - ideal for personalised engraving. Pair of field panel doors, dressed with an inset brass-lined lock — in working order, key present. Three drawer interior, each fitted with brass shield backplates with recessed handles. Drawers lined with striking cobalt blue velvet, with small plaques for each type of cutlery.
It is of large service size, hosting 108 absent pieces - drawers can hold 36, 43 and 29pcs respectively. Brass drop handles to either side for ease of carriage, in the campaign manner. Benefits from a recently applied emerald green protective baize to base. Maker's label for Mappin & Webb Ltd, London, Sheffield & Johannesburg
