A compact four-tier whatnot in the Sheraton Revival style crafted in well-figured mahogany. The square shelves are each centred by a marquetry roundel, the tiers outlined with fine double line stringing and shaped corner details, all raised on straight square legs and set on quality original small brass castors.
Light and refined in character, this is the English whatnot form sometimes also called an étagère. The scale is suited to a range of uses, from display to housing books or curios. Easy to move into position as needed on its castors, with a small footprint that tucks neatly beside a chair or sofa.
Presented in very good antique condition with a warm aged patina and minor marks from use, including a small loss to the inner frame beneath the top. The inlay is intact and the castors run freely. There is some minor age-related shrinkage visible to the lower shelves, entirely stable and typical of mahogany of this period. Everything is sturdy, structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1905.
