Description
Turn of the Century Coat of Arms
Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf
An intriguing antique ( circa 1900) carved wooden heraldic coat of arms, dated 1751 and inscribed "ZINZENDORF". The carving may relate to the Zinzendorf family and is possibly associated with Nikolaus Ludwig, Count of Zinzendorf and Pottendorf (1700–1760), founder and patron of the renewed Moravian Church. The date 1751 coincides with the year Count Zinzendorf established his residence in London, making this an interesting, though unconfirmed, historical association. In the absence of documented provenance, this attribution should be regarded as speculative.
The carving displays an exceptional level of age related character, with a beautifully weathered surface, heavy paint craquelure and areas of worn and distressed finish accumulated over centuries of exposure. The reverse shows deep natural grain, old tool marks and later metal hanging brackets, all contributing to its genuine period appeal.
Condition is commensurate with its considerable age. There is heavy weathering and wear throughout, including losses to the painted surface, edge wear, old splits and shrinkage to the timber. The upper section has a prominent horizontal crack, and while it remains attached, this area is slightly loose/wobbly and should be handled with care. Despite these age related issues, the carving remains structurally intact for display and possesses a wonderful rustic presence.
