Description
Antique Old Master Portrait Drawing, After Van Dyck John VIII, Count of Nassau (1583–1638), Lord of Cattenell and Beilstein, in Armour — Graphite on Paper A superb antique portrait drawing in graphite, after the celebrated court portrait type created by Sir Anthony van Dyck and disseminated through the engraved version by Paulus Pontius (published by Martinus van den Enden). Cabinet-scale, richly detailed, and highly decorative, this is a classic piece of European Old Master inspired wall art—ideal for a library, study, hallway, or traditional interior. Depicted half-length in ceremonial armour, John VIII presents the composed authority associated with Baroque aristocratic portraiture. The baton of command crosses the torso on a strong diagonal, while the lace collar adds courtly refinement and contrasts beautifully with the crisp metallic forms of the armour. The artist’s controlled tonal range creates depth, sheen, and psychological presence without overworking—exactly what collectors look for in a refined “after” drawing. Medium: Graphite on paper School / Date: Unknown European Master, Continental School, late 18th to early 19th century After: Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) Engraved prototype: Paulus Pontius (after Van Dyck), published by Martinus van den Enden Latin inscription (recto) Excellentissimus Dominus Dominus Ioannes, Comes Nassoviae, Dominus Cattenell et Beilstein. Translation: “The Most Excellent Lord, Sir John, Count of Nassau, Lord of Cattenell and Beilstein.” A formal prestige caption typical of early engraved portrait series, reinforcing rank and lineage. Why this antique drawing works so well decoratively Old Master look with Baroque presence and collector appeal Aristocratic subject in armour—instant impact on the wall Elegant graphite technique with fine modelling and crisp detail Perfect scale for interiors—statement piece without overpowering a room Ready to hang in a quality gilt frame with mount Provenance: From an album of drawings assembled by Winfield S. Robbins, who travelled through Europe in the late 19th century collecting prints and drawings, particularly portraits. Later acquired from an art dealer in Maryland, USA; curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD and exhibited at Famous Lord Hill Museum. Signature / verso notes Unsigned, consistent with academically trained “after Van Dyck” cabinet drawings of this period. Inscribed on the verso in period pencil with identification of the sitter, dates (1583–1638), and attribution after Van Dyck. Framing: Professionally presented in a Larson Juhl decorative gilt wood frame with a crisp white mount and refined gold inner surround—clean, traditional, and very “period-correct” for an Old Master inspired portrait.
