Description
19th Century William IV / late Regency period Anglo-Indian inverted breakfront pedestal sideboard crafted in solid padouk with an excellent patina and colour. Likely made in Bombay or Southern India, the piece reflects the skilled carving and quality associated with Anglo-Indian furniture of this era. The solid padouk top, in classic inverted breakfront form, features a crisp gadrooned edge. Beneath the top are three drawers: a long central drawer with a smaller drawer to each side, positioned above the pedestals. All drawers are padouk-lined and carved on the fronts with foliage and rosette decoration, with the carving continuing around the sides of the top. The top is supported by two rectangular pedestals, each with a carved door front featuring a stylised pedestal-like design typical of Anglo-Indian work. Each door displays a carved central sunburst with a rosette, with carved capitals and gadrooned detailing below. The doors are missing their internal locking mechanisms. One pedestal contains a cellarette, and the other has a shelved interior. Below the pedestals is a carved gadrooned moulding leading down to eight carved gadrooned feet, giving the piece a strong and balanced presence. The sunburst motif is a characteristic feature of Anglo-Indian furniture from this period, particularly from the Bombay region, possibly influenced by the pleated fabric designs seen in Regency decoration. This is the base section only, without its original upper structure, making it highly versatile and suitable for use as a sideboard, console, or even as a desk.
