Description
A highly unusual sterling silver George V Arts & Crafts silver caddy spoon.
It is clearly hallmarked on the reverse for Birmingham 1926, with the maker's mark of Winifred King & Co. The bowl is spot-hammered, and the handle almost certainly formed as 'Judy's' head, complete with bonnet. Fab!

In the early 20th century, silversmiths and brass makers frequently used characters from Punch and Judy as decorative finials for tea caddy spoons.
Winifred King and Co. was an Arts and Crafts venture dating from circa 1920-1940 between Winifred King and Mildred Murphy. Based in Coventry, they are best known for small silver items such as spoons. This spoon is one of their earliest hallmarked pieces. King and Murphy worked at Old Palace Chambers, Earl Street, in Coventry. King was a leading figure in the local arts movement, becoming Secretary of the Coventry and Warwick Society of Artists. She was a regular exhibitor at their annual exhibitions as well as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Exhibitions. Her work can be found in Coventry's main museum, the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery.
