Description
This is a wonderful example of a George Vth Arts & Crafts sterling silver caddy spoon.
It was designed by Bernard Cuzner for Liberty & Co and is hallmarked for Birmingham 1912. It features an elongated bowl and shaped handle, both with sharp geometric bright cut design. It is chunky and tactile. The silver is in good condition, no tears or dents, just surface abrasions entirely in keeping with an item of this age.
Bernard Cuzner initially trained as a watchmaker before showing talent as a silversmith. He moved to Birmingham to train at the Vittoria Street School of Jewellery and Silversmithing, and Birmingham School of Art, where he was influenced by Robert Catterson Smith and Arthur Gaskin. From 1900 he taught at the school and began designing for W.H. Haseler and Liberty & Co. He was head of the department of metalwork at the Birmingham School of Art from 1910 until 1942. He worked in the Arts and Crafts style with recognisable decoration. He also designed for Liberty's 'Cymric' range of silverware and jewellery from 1899, as well as for private commissions.
