Antique Victorian Pitch Pine & Cast Iron Reversible Tram Bench c.1890

A Victorian reversible tram bench, the solid pitch pine back rail with chamfered edges and under-mounted iron uprights, set over a single-plank pitch pine seat displaying bold, undulating grain, raised on cast iron standards incorporating arched cross-braces, low-mounted pivots and splayed foot terminals pierced with apertures for floor fixings. Designed for hardy public use on tram or train platforms, the bench translates effortlessly to the home. Because the backrest swings over smoothly without having to move the heavy cast iron base, its narrow footprint is ideally suited to floating down the centre of a stone-flagged entrance hall, acting as a practical room divider in a boot room, or serving as a dual-aspect seat between an open-plan dining table and the hearth. Very good antique condition, retaining an attractive patina and authentic surface wear consistent with age. The mechanism operates freely and smoothly.
