Victorian Furniture technically begins with the Coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and runs through until her death in 1901. At the start Victorian Furniture very much copied the austere Georgian style which proceeded it, but as the years went on pieces became far more ornate. This was often due to the increase in mechanisation and new techniques such as machine cutting and machine carving. Well figured Mahogany with a deep French Polish finish was the preferred material for quality items, although other timbers such as Satinwood, Rosewood, Oak and Walnut were also found. These items were usually decorated with deep sweeping carvings and mouldings as well as inlays. It was a period trying to embrace everything new and exotic from around the burgeoning English Empire and it did so proudly.
While the number of furniture makers increased substantially during the Victorian Era a few managed to distinguish themselves above the rest. These included Gillows of Lancaster, Waring of Liverpool, Miles & Edwards of London and Howard & Sons of London. By the end of the Century leading Department Stores such as Liberty & Co and Heals were also producing their own quality furniture. Because variety was very much in vogue at the time there is not just one simple Victorian Style but many.
