This is a very imposing Victorian sterling silver claret jug or wine ewer made by Edward & Joseph Mappin trading as Mappin Brothers and hallmarked in London 1865. It is in very good condition and hallmarks both to the body and lid are clearly struck. The interior is gilded and the lid topped with grapes and vine leaves. There is all over decoration and a single initial to the front beneath the spout. The jug is made with a good gauge of silver and stands firmly on a raised circular base which underneath has the stamp for Mappin Brothers. A jug of high quality as you would expect from these well respected silversmiths (NB any shadows shown in photographs are merely reflections).
