Of all the silver tableware the English jugs or creamers are among the most elegant and pleasing. As more exotic hot drinks such as tea, chocolate and coffee began to gain popularity at the start of the 18th Century, Silver quickly became the perfect table accompaniment alongside Oriental Porcelain. Not only could the Silver be fashioned into beautiful and intricate forms to reflect the social status of these new drinks but being metal, Silver helps to keep the milk or cream cooler for longer and is hygienic due to its aseptic and antibacterial properties. Alongside the creamer the tall and slender Silver Ewer also grew in popularity intended for wine, Claret or water.
There are naturally many forms of milk jug and Ewer that can be found today, but the early Georgian Silver examples tended to copy the Neo-Classical tastes of the day with a simple baluster or claw feet holding up an elegantly proportioned bowl and handle. By the 19th Century the forms became more squat and ever more decorated, although the older simpler style continued alongside this. Indeed, apart from some unusual Art Deco and Modernist examples during the 20th Century, most Silver jugs have remained quite traditional in form for over 300 years.
At LoveAntiques we have an ever-changing selection of quality antique and vintage Silver jugs for any occasion.
