The match box measures 8cm long, 4cm wide, and approximately 1.5cm high plus the bun feet.
The match box is hallmarked for Chester 1895, with a maker’s mark for the Birmingham silversmith Stokes & Ireland Ltd (William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland). The same hallmarks are on the “go to bed”.
The match box has a nicely planished finish, typical of the Arts & Crafts era, and a central vacant cartouche.
Stokes & Ireland Ltd was a Birmingham silversmith company, known for producing Arts & Crafts style silverware, including tea caddies, photo frames, and other household items. They were established in 1891 by William Henry Stokes and Arthur George Ireland, and though based in Birmingham, their pieces were often assayed in Chester. The company was known for its consistently good quality and remained in business until the late 1930s.
