Description
Approach to Whitby A Maritime View of the Port of Whitby with Approaching Shipping by George Chambers Senior, 1835
A large scale oil on canvas by this noted maritime artist, the present composition represents a view of the artist’s home port of Whitby. The shoreline is in the distance, complete with a view of Whitby Abbey, familiar to most people from its role in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. In the middle ground are a number of trading brigs sailing in to and out of the harbour and a small launch rowing against the choppy sea. The sun is setting, casting a beautiful glow over the background of the picture and contrasting with the cloudy skies in the right and central sections of the work.
