Archibald Thorburn: Signed Print - Mallards at Low Tide

Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) is acknowledged as one of the finest wild life artists of all time. He was born in Lasswade, near Edinburgh, the son of a painter of miniatures who was largely responsible for his perfectionist training. His talent was evident very early and by 1890 he was already famous. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880-1900 but then turned mainly to book illustrations. He was elected Vice President of Rspb in 1927 in recognition of his work. He moved to Hascombe in Surrey in 1902 but regularly returned to Scotland to paint. This print of Mallard ducks at low tide is signed in pencil by the artist lower left, and also in the print dated 1921. The print was first published 1922. The print also bears a blindstamp lower left. A lovely piece, and nicely framed in grey wash frame to reflect the foreshore colours.
