Description
Attributed to Paul Marny (1829–1914) – Harbour Scene with Fishing Boat A charming late 19th-century harbour scene depicting a fishing boat moored beside a quay, with figures working along the waterfront and traditional waterside buildings beyond. Executed with a confident, economical hand, the composition captures the quiet atmosphere of a working harbour, with subtle reflections on the water and a soft, muted palette typical of coastal studies of the period. The work is attributed to the French painter and illustrator Paul Marny and appears to bear a faint signature to the lower right. Marny was known for his marine and landscape subjects, particularly scenes of harbours, fishing boats and coastal life, making this an entirely characteristic example of his work. Marny was born in Paris; his real name may have been Paul François or Charles Paul Goddard. He worked in the theatre, and as a porcelain decorator for the Sèvres factory, before moving to Belfast to work with a French architect. In 1860 he moved to Scarborough, at the suggestion of Oliver Sarony, the photographic pioneer and brother of Napoleon Sarony.[1][2] There he taught Albert Strange and other Scarborough artists. William Tindall was his brother-in-law. Marny exhibited at the Royal Academy. He died in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, on 24 October 1914 Presented in an attractive period gilt composition frame with foliate decoration, the painting has excellent decorative appeal and would sit beautifully within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
