Barry Newis (1939-2017) Abstract Charcoal Portrait Painting Of The Artist's Wife

Attributed to 'Barry Newis' (1937 - 2017) Postwar - British Barry Newis was born in 1939 and was primarily inspired creatively by the 1950s growing up. During the Post War period, New York City became the international focus for Modernism. Throughout the Second World War, many artists had made their way to the city after having fled in exile from Europe, which culminated in a merging and amalgamation of abilities and ideas. Whilst in New York, influential Europeans such as Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers and Hans Hoffmann provided inspiration for American artists and influenced cultural development in the United States for many subsequent decades. Abstract Expressionism dominated in the 1950s as a chief method of painting and explored ideas about the sublime and spirituality. Artists chose to focus on painting’s formal properties, and Action Painting took inspiration from the political freedoms of the United States, in opposition to the strictures of the Soviet bloc. Significant artists of this period included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. In later revisions, the contributions and efforts of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois have been acknowledged, amongst many other female creatives. This is a stunning quality large Charcoal Pastel Abstract Portrait Painting depicting the artist's wife 'Linda', who is portrayed in a seated nude position within an interior setting. Dating to the latter part of the 20th Century (Circa 1979) and offered in an overall fabulous original condition. The impressive piece is mounted within the original pinewood frame and it is glazed which has protected the work wonderfully.
