A beautiful coloured stipple engraving of Adam and Eve with Archangel Raphael , illustrating Book V of Milton's Paradise Lost. (see photos for details). Dating from the late 18th/early 19th century.
Francesco Bartolozzi RA (1725-1815) was a famous Italian artist, who came to London where he became a prolific engraver. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy and the founding President of the society of Engravers. This engraving is of a painting by Thomas Stothard RA (1755-1834), who was also a prolific English painter illustrator and engraver.
This piece makes a good pair with our other Bartolozzi engraving of Adam and Eve, illustrating Book IV Paradise Lost

2 small tears mid right side, just outside printed area. Otherwise very good. Colours strong. Presented in a grey washed wooden frame with part gilding and grey line washed mount.
